A Virtual Dedicated server differs from a virtual private server in the separation layer of hard- and software. A virtual private server usually installs a full operating system like Microsoft Windows Server or Linux RedHat. On top of this full operating system, a virtualisation program will be installed, responsible for dividing the resources in that base operating system. The main drawback in this method is that the base operating system availability usually determines the availability of all virtual servers. Microsoft systems for example often require a reboot for a software update. Another drawback in the full operating system is that this technique consumes a lot of resources, having less power available for it's virtual servers and slower performances compared to our vSphere setup. And last but not least, there is the drawback that the number of supported setups for virtual servers is limited. Some operating system flavors won't be supported or will run less performant depending on the base OS.
